I don't think he considered himself an asshole.

I'm curious what they teach police officers about the situation he was in.

The officer was outside looking in...so if he suddenly noticed someone ALREADY pointing a weapon at him.....well, what would you do?

sometimes i completely agree with beta's idea on police 'ignorance'. there are times when cops have bigger ***** than they really do and they wanna display them.
i have been in several situations involving the police and they are all jerks.
however, when i attempt to rationalize they average 'cop' mentality...(which is kinda like a cop-out for me), i understand that they are in a different situation than i am.
what i mean is, they have to ride the line, make quick decisions and react without much thought.
toy guns sometime DO look real, especially in the dark. i will admit that i have no idea where you guys heard of this happening. (being away from a television DOES have its downfalls).
i try to look at it like this:
society today is wanting to go for REAL. we all know this. the gun situation...well, they got what they deserved.
toy gun or no...if you are pointing a weapon at someone who you KNOW has a weapon (and is trained to use it)...it serves you right.

i will admit that i am 'one of those' americans who do not own a gun nor will i ever own one. when i lived in georgia, we had guns laying all over the place...and i became very familiar with gun usage. it also helps to know that my father was a cop for about 15 years. (he was one of those jerk cops i mentioned earlier).
i remember playing cops and robbers and cowboys and indians as a child. but i just had those cheesy silver cap guns.
oh well...
if someone got killed because of a toy gun, i can only be cynical about it. sorry.
its just one less personl on the earth.

The case is ongoing, Johnny Cochrane is involved.

The person who died was a sort of up and coming actor who had appeared on ER and a couple of movies. (don't know his exact resume)

Two things...pointing any kind of a weapon at any one is pure evil...

Pointing a weapon, or one that looks like a weapon, that can cause injury from a distance that is greater than the person's arm reach is the biggest unrecognized evil in the world.

So the person who died is apparently guilty of that....however, since nobody recognizes this as the biggest evil on the planet, he gets the benefit of the doubt because he was in a social setting and others didn't seem to mind him and his toy gun.

I still wonder if the officer had more time to duck and cover than pull his gun out and shoot.

You may hear more about this case in the next few days since a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the victims family and it happened Halloween Night last year.

Perhaps it's where you live in the country.

Couple years ago, dressed-up as the guy who took pot-shots at the White House (What was his name, Fredrico Duran?). Went to a local bar ith one of my SKS assault-rifles slung over a shoulder. Had a totally illegal bananna clip on it. Didn't leave until about 3am, THEN the cops spotted me (Damn!)

They got a chuckle outa the "Get on the news, TAKE ME TO THE WHITE HOUSE" sign around my neck, checked the gun to make sure it wasn't loaded, didn't confiscate the fully loaded Accutek .380 pistol in my pocket, and gave me a ride home.

It's all how you act around cops that determines their reaction/response to you.

Wow, this thread has gone so far astray from the first post.

So what is everyone going to be doing for Halloween? I am not going to be doing anything. I will probably be stuck at home handing out (and eating) the cheap candy that seems to always get handed out in my house.
